Chicago Street Studio Project

The What:
The Chicago Street Studio Project is the creation of a lasting memorial to the enduring love and passion of human beings, which will touch, move and inspire people for generations to come.

The How:
10,000 portraits printed on glass tile and used to permanently re-tile the entire Grand/State Red-line CTA subway station. The entire 450 feet of wall space (x2) on each platform will be covered, as well as the lobby and the four entrances on the corners of Grand and State St. Each tile will be 12 x12 inches or 12 x 24.2 inches, large enough to be seen by all who view them.

For the next year and a half, Thomas Marlow will continue to take portraits, as found at www.chicagostreetstudioproject.org, in various neighborhoods around Chicago, a few being, The Loop, Pilsen, Bronzeville, Wrigleyville, Old Town, River West, Englewood and Hyde Park. The portraits are intended to capture the cultural diversity of the City of Chicago, both old and young, foreign and native, and of all races, creeds and colors. Upon completion of the photography, the tiles will be fabricated by Franz Mayer of Germany, a company that has fabricated glass mosaics and art instillation pieces in both public and private spaces and in cities like Munich, Washington DC, New York, London, Montreal and Paris.

The Why:
Each visitor to the station will take away something different, something new, something they might never have imagined before and will foster dreams to create things great and small. The Grand/State Red-Line “People’s Gallery” will be a Chicago landmark, a destination unto itself, and will attract people from all over the world, inspiring generation after generation for the next 100 years.
